The Manhattan Beach Open

Pro beach volleyball draws scores of spectators for a number of reasons – the competition is fierce, the action is non-stop, and the setting is a beach. What could be better?

The AVP Manhattan Beach Open is known as “The Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball,” for its history and allure. Beach volleyball traces its roots to Hawaii in the early part of the last century, but the construction of new jetties and the subsequent pier built on Southern California’s Pacific Coast created the now famous, large, sandy areas that were dedicated “for the enjoyment of the public.”

Californians took note, and soon sand volleyball nets were cropping up all along the cost, with organized competitions soon to follow.

Manhattan Beach and its pier are famous and beloved, even hallowed grounds for Californians. The reputation of the MBO rests in part on that laurel, as it is a place where “everyone wants to win, at least once,” according the legendary Karch Kiraly.
