Host to the third major to take place in each of professional golf’s calendar years, the Open Championship, or commonly, the British Open, has its choice of nine courses on which to locate the field of play. Currently, The Old Course at St. Andrews Links has hosted the tournament 27 times, and if you ask the players, it’s the only course.

There is written record of golf having been played there since some time around 1554, but locals allege that it was likely earlier than that. And if you’ve wondered why there are 18 holes on a golf course, rather than say, 20, look no further than St. Andrews.

When in 1764 the Old Course was paired from 22 down to 18 holes, it became the standard the world over.
