Nov. 2009 - Hawaii's Alana Blanchard (Kauai) hit a career high today, defeating reigning world champion Stephanie Gilmore (Australia) to post a win in the Vans Hawaiian Pro, the first stop of the $1,000,000 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
1983 - When Hawai'i's Michael Ho won the newly created Vans Triple Crown title for the first time 25 years ago, he was already famous. One year, he won the Pipe Masters with a broken arm.
In place since 1997 (women's triple crown) - The women's Triple Crown, in place since 1997, belonged to Australia's Layne Beachley for three seasons before South African Heather Clark earned it in 2000.
For the men, the three events are the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park; the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach; and the Billabong Pipeline Masters at the Banzai Pipeline.
The women's events are the Vans Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park; the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach; and the Billabong Pro Maui at Honolua Bay, Maui.
All events, with the exception of the women's Billabong Pro Maui, are staged on the North Shore of Oahu - a coastline world famous in surfing terms for its clockwork winter swells that reach 50 feet in height
