The World Figure Skating Championships

The athletes at the World Figure Skating Championships can be characterized, at least during their performances, as the epitome of grace in sport.

The event itself is sanctioned by the International Skating Union, and features the cream of the crop in a competition for the title of world champion, a title considered to be second only to Olympic Champion.

The Championship has been held since 1902, but the judges table was originally populated solely by locals, leading to controversy from the early days that still persists in contemporary figure skating.

With a history that began with women and men competing together – and Madge Syers-Cave taking the overall silver for lack of a women’s event in 1904 – the event may be the most equitable sport in the world from the gender perspective.
