The Breeders Cup

Held in late fall, The Breeders Cup is a two-day horse-racing event that brings together the best racers and horses to compete in the hallmark race for North American thoroughbreds.

The event was founded by North American thoroughbred breeder extraordinaire John R. Gaines, and was, until 2007, run as a one-day only event. In 2008, the event expanded to two days, with elimination rounds and a “You Win, You’re in” competitive philosophy.

Prior to its expansion to the two-day elimination format, The Breeders Cup was generally considered to be the world’s richest day in sport, having been surpassed only by Dubai World Cup Night, featuring six races and a purse of slightly more than $21 million in its 2008 running.

Attendance at The Breeders Cup is high. The race regularly draws more spectators than other stakes race, with close competitors in the Derby, the Preakness, and the Kentucky Oaks.
