Epsom Derby

Britain’s richest horse said is nothing to sneeze at. The Epsom Derby – known locally simply as “The Derby” – is the most prestigious of Britain’s five Classics, and runs annually in early June.

In 1779, at the first running of the Oaks Stakes, every one had so much fun on the paddock that they decided there should be another race. Why limit the good times?

It was promptly decided that the race shall be named after either the host of the part y, The 12^th Earl of Derby, or one of his distinguished guests, Sir Charles Bunbury. Legend has it that Derby won with a coin toss.

Thankfully Bunbury wasn’t much for wagers. It is said that he deferred to his host, thus the Derby Stakes have continued in perpetuity.

Kings, Princes, Earls, Dukes and Sires are known to wager on the Derby, so bring a pocket full of pounds Sterling and your most polite demeanor.

Nobody wants to lose their head.
