La Bombonera

Or so the saying goes. Translation – the Bombonera does not tremble. It Beats.

When fans at the Bombonera – the colloquial nickname for the Alberto M. Armando Stadium – start to jump in rhythm, the stadium vibrates.

The Bombonera – meaning “The Chocolate Box” for its peculiar shape – is located in Buenos Aires and hosts the Boca Juniors, the local football club, when it plays home games.

Opened in 1940, the stadium has seen a few expansion, but due to the envelope of the stadium’s property, the owners have had to build mostly upward rather than outward. A relatively small football stadium, they pack 49,000 fans into the Bombonera for a sold-out match, and boy is it a scream when they do.

The Bombonera is located in Buenos Aires “La Boca” district, and area ripe with Italian immigrant history and culture, so post-game festivities run high, especially when the home team Juniors take home a victory.
