Holmenkollen Ski Jump

If you think they look completely crazed on television, try it first hand. In the gallery at Holmenkollen, you get an up close look at just how far these jumpers fly – flinging their bodies through the air for hundreds of feet with nothing but trust in physics and a pair of skis to rely upon.

Holmenkollen, located in Oslo, Norway, has been a hub for recreational skiing since the late 19^th century, with competitions first appearing in 1892 before a crowd of 10,000.

With easy access from downtown Oslo, the ski jump and surrounding residential area are at the terminus of the eponymous Holmenkollen line. At 417 meters above sea level, the tower offers amazing panoramic views of Oslo and the Oslo Fjord.

The facility is amazing, with amphitheater-like seating that holds some 50,000 spectators. Holmenkollen will play host the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a newly renovated jump that meets the FIS height standards, sure to be a must see.
